Thunderstorms Coming: NiMet Warns Nigerians Not to Take Weather Risks

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a weather warning that Nigerians should not treat as another routine rainy-season announcement.

NiMet forecasts thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday, with strong winds expected to precede thunderstorms in some locations.

Residents should take weather warnings seriously, especially when dark clouds, strong winds, lightning or sudden temperature changes begin.If a thunderstorm approaches, outdoor activities should stop.

People should move indoors and stay away from isolated trees, exposed hilltops, open fields and metal structures.

Motorists should slow down when visibility falls.

Drivers should avoid attempting to cross flooded roads simply because the water appears shallow.

That is one of the most dangerous mistakes people make during heavy rain. Water can conceal broken sections of road, open drainage channels, culverts and other hazards.

Protect homes and businesses

Residents should also secure loose roofing sheets, outdoor furniture, signs and other objects that can be lifted by strong winds.

Where possible, electrical appliances should be disconnected during severe storms, particularly if power supply becomes unstable.

People should avoid touching electrical equipment with wet hands. Parents should pay particular attention to children during storms.

A child playing outdoors during lightning or a sudden downpour can quickly become exposed to risks adults may underestimate.

Flooding can follow rainfall

Rainfall itself is not always the greatest danger. The problem can be what happens afterwards. Blocked drainage channels can turn ordinary rainfall into street flooding. Low-lying communities can experience rapid water accumulation.
