A quiet Friday morning turned tragic in Okochiri community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, after fire engulfed a family home and killed a mother and her four children.
The five victims were trapped inside the residence when the fire broke out, according to reports from the community.Residents reportedly mobilised to fight the fire but could not rescue the family.
The victims were later found dead inside the house.Igwe Godswill, commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika, confirmed that four children and their mother died in the incident.
He said authorities were still gathering information about what happened and that a proper investigation would be required to establish the cause.
Some community sources suggested that petrol may have been involved in the incident after a spark, but that account had not been independently established when the report was filed.
The Rivers State Police Command had yet to issue a detailed official statement at the time.
The tragedy has left residents asking questions about what caused the fire and whether the family had any opportunity to escape.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation, and the reported involvement of petrol should therefore not be treated as an established cause until authorities complete their findings.
