Imagine a surgeon looking into an operating field and seeing cancerous tissue light up where the naked eye might struggle to distinguish it from healthy tissue.

That is the idea behind an innovation developed by Nigerian-born scientist Professor Samuel Achilefu and his research collaborators.

Achilefu, a biomedical scientist and inventor, led the development of specialised cancer-vision goggles that use fluorescence imaging to help surgeons identify cancerous tissue during tumour-removal operations.

The technology works with a fluorescent imaging agent. The agent is introduced into the patient and targets cancerous tissue.

Under the appropriate near-infrared lighting, the affected areas produce a fluorescent signal that the goggles can detect.

This gives surgeons an additional visual guide while operating, helping them distinguish tumour tissue from surrounding healthy tissue.

The technology has already been tested in patients

The breakthrough is not merely a laboratory concept.Washington University researchers reported the first use of the goggles during human surgery in 2014, when breast surgeon Julie Margenthaler used the technology during an operation at Siteman Cancer Center in St Louis.

Researchers subsequently evaluated an optical see-through version of the system in breast cancer patients. A peer-reviewed study reported that the goggles successfully assisted with sentinel lymph-node identification and tumour-margin assessment in the patients studied.

The potential benefit is significant because one of the challenges in cancer surgery is determining whether all identifiable tumour tissue has been removed. If cancerous tissue remains at the surgical margin, a patient may require additional treatment or another operation.

The technology was therefore developed partly to give surgeons a clearer view of what needs to be removed while limiting unnecessary damage to healthy tissue.

From Washington University to UT Southwestern

Achilefu’s work has continued beyond his years at Washington University. At UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he now serves as Chair of Biomedical Engineering, he and his colleagues have continued developing the technology into what the institution calls Medical Vision Goggles.

UT Southwestern reported in 2025 that the goggles had been tested in clinical trials and were designed as a more compact and potentially cost-effective alternative to conventional fluorescence-guided surgery systems.

The newer system allows surgeons to view the surgical site while simultaneously seeing a fluorescent overlay indicating areas where residual tumour cells may be present.

The technology can also identify satellite tumours close to a primary tumour, according to UT Southwestern.

For Achilefu, the work represents a long-running effort to use biomedical imaging to make cancer treatment more precise.

His research has produced numerous scientific publications and patents.

A profile from the National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies lists him as the inventor of 56 issued US patents as of its 2021 update.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the significance of Achilefu’s work lies not simply in the futuristic appearance of the goggles, but in the problem they seek to solve: helping surgeons identify cancerous tissue that may otherwise be difficult to distinguish during an operation.

The technology is still part of an evolving field of fluorescence-guided cancer surgery, so it should not be presented as a cure for cancer or as a guarantee that every cancer cell can be detected.

But the principle is powerful. Give surgeons a clearer way to see what the human eye may miss, and surgery itself can become more precise.

From a Nigerian-born scientist to a technology being developed for use in modern cancer care, Achilefu’s work offers another striking example of how scientific ideas can cross borders and potentially improve medical practice, ValidViewNetwork reports.
