PORT HARCOURT — Long before the handcuffs clicked and the heavy wooden doors of a Rivers State High Court slammed shut on a cold October morning, Gracious David-West walked into a sanctuary carrying a monster he could no longer cage.
He was drowning in what he later described as an “irresistible urge.” Seeking salvation, the itinerant sex predator walked into the Lord’s Chosen Church in Oyingbo, confessed to the horrific string of murders looping through his mind, and begged for help.
The response he received was not a call to the authorities, but an invitation to a Friday prayer crusade.
He never met the General Overseer. Instead, he walked back out into the open air, checked into another low-cost hotel, and killed again.
Anatomy of a Predator
Born around 1980 in Buguma, Rivers State, David-West’s trajectory read like a blueprint for modern societal failure. Raised as the only son in a fractured polygamous household, he inherited impossible expectations he claimed he could never fulfill.
A former armed robber who drifted through militant street gang networks like the Greenlanders, David-West mastered the art of camouflage. Between July and September 2019, he turned Port Harcourt—and stretches of Lagos, Abia, Imo, and Edo states—into a personal hunting ground.
His M.O. was chillingly consistent. He lured women to cheap, poorly regulated hotels, waited until they fell asleep, and pinned a kitchen knife to their throats. After extracting compliance, he strangled them—often binding them with strips torn from white bedsheets—before emptying their bank accounts and selling off their stolen phones to pre-arranged buyers.
At least 15 women lost their lives to his methodical cruelty. Yet, even as his blood toll mounted, institutional safety nets repeatedly collapsed. Beyond the Oyingbo pastor’s tragic brush-off, David-West claimed he sought refuge at other spiritual centers, only to slip away because he had nowhere to sleep. The system, spiritual and secular, offered bureaucracy and blind eyes where urgent intervention was required.
The Trial and the Empty Gallery
The reign of terror abruptly collapsed in September 2019 when hotel closed-circuit television (CCTV) caught him fleeing the scene of a murder in Rukpokwu. Intercepted by police on the East-West Road toward Uyo, David-West offered a full, unprompted video confession.
When Justice Adolphus Enebeli ultimately convicted him of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging, the courtroom drama should have felt like closure. David-West sat flanked by prison guards, his defense counsel fighting a losing battle against overwhelming forensic and video evidence.
Yet, the most haunting aspect of the judgment wasn’t the graphic nature of the crimes or the cold calculation of the killer. It was the audience.
As justice was dispensed for the lives of fifteen daughters, sisters, and mothers, the public gallery was practically a ghost town. Only one person showed up: a single grieving father, who attended the opening day and vanished into the shadows thereafter.

As David-West’s legal team subsequently pressed appeals through the appellate courts, the deeper, uncomfortable question remains suspended over the nation’s conscience: Were these women victims of a serial predator alone, or did society fail them twice—first by letting a killer slip through the cracks of inadequate security and spiritual negligence, and finally, by forgetting their names before the soil even settled?
