The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians following the deaths of eight women in and around Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, over about two months.

The advisory urges Nigerians, particularly women and girls, to exercise heightened vigilance around areas including Kempton Park, Rhodesfield and surrounding communities.

The warning comes as South African authorities intensify investigations into the deaths.

Police have not confirmed a serial killer

The circumstances surrounding the deaths have generated fears that they could be connected.

But authorities have been careful not to draw that conclusion prematurely.

South African police have not established that all the deaths were committed by one person or that they are linked.

A multi-disciplinary investigation involving specialist detectives, forensic experts and other resources has been established.

That distinction is important. The discovery of several bodies in the same broad area over a relatively short period has raised serious concerns, but a suspected pattern is not the same thing as a confirmed link.

What Nigeria is telling its citizens

The Nigerian Consulate has advised citizens to avoid walking or exercising alone in isolated or poorly lit areas, travel in groups where possible, remain alert to their surroundings, vary routines and use reputable transportation.

It has also urged Nigerians to report emergencies and provide information that could assist South African investigators.

The warning is particularly significant for Nigerians who live, work or travel through the affected areas.

A wider South African concern

The deaths have triggered wider concern across Gauteng.South African authorities and lawmakers have appealed to residents to cooperate with investigators and provide information that could help identify those responsible.

The investigation is still developing.

For Nigerians in the affected communities, however, the message from their consulate is immediate: take reasonable precautions, stay alert and report suspicious activity rather than relying on rumours circulating online.

Until investigators establish whether the cases are connected, the facts of each death must be treated separately while authorities work to determine the full picture, ValidViewNetwork reports.
