David Beckham has thrown his support behind Lionel Messi for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, pointing to the Argentine’s extraordinary contribution at the World Cup and his continued production for Inter Miami.
Messi has now scored 100 goals for the club in just 115 appearances.
At 39, Messi remains one of the central names on this year’s 30-man shortlist.
But there is an important question behind Beckham’s statement: Does Messi’s season actually fit the Ballon d’Or criteria?
The answer depends on what voters place the greatest weight on.
What the award actually measures
The Ballon d’Or is not officially awarded simply to the player with the most goals. Its published criteria include individual performances, including decisive and impressive contributions; team performances and achievements; and the player’s class and fair play.
That matters because Messi’s case is not built around one statistic.
It combines individual production with team success.
Messi’s numbers
Messi recently reached 100 goals for Inter Miami in his 115th appearance, a remarkable scoring rate.
He has also collected four trophies with the club since joining, including the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, Eastern Conference title and MLS Cup.
Inter Miami also records Messi as the 2025 MLS Golden Boot winner with 29 goals and 48 goal contributions, while he was named MLS MVP in both 2024 and 2025.
Then came the World Cup. Messi helped Argentina reach the 2026 final, adding another major international performance to his résumé.
That combination is precisely why Beckham’s argument has substance under the award’s published framework.
But the competition is strong
Messi is not operating in a vacuum.
Kylian Mbappé has argued that the Ballon d’Or is an individual award and pointed to his own numbers, including 15 Champions League goals and 25 in La Liga.
Lamine Yamal has also entered the discussion after Spain’s World Cup success and Barcelona’s domestic achievements. Yamal himself identified Mbappé as his principal rival.
That makes the 2026 award an interesting test of what voters consider most important.Is it individual statistical dominance? Team trophies? International performance? Or the combined weight of all three?

Why Beckham’s argument resonates
Messi’s strongest argument is that his season is not dependent on nostalgia. The numbers are current. He has continued producing goals, winning trophies and influencing matches at club level while also remaining central to Argentina on the international stage.
His age makes the achievement more striking, but age itself is not a Ballon d’Or criterion. The relevant question is performance.
And Messi’s 2026 record gives voters plenty to examine.
The final decision will be made by the Ballon d’Or jury, not Beckham, Messi or any individual fan.
