Abbas Barred From New York as US Extends Palestinian Visa Restrictions

For Mahmoud Abbas, the United Nations podium in New York will again be reached through a screen rather than a plane.

The United States has denied the Palestinian Authority president a visa to attend the UN General Assembly in person, marking the second consecutive year he has been prevented from travelling to New York for the annual gathering.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Washington has extended visa restrictions on Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organisation officials, citing what it describes as failures to meet commitments and actions that undermine prospects for peace.

The US specifically points to Palestinian efforts to pursue the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through international institutions, including the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice, as well as efforts towards unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The Palestinian side disputes Washington’s position and has argued that decades of negotiations have failed to deliver an independent Palestinian state.

The timing matters. The decision comes as the international debate over Palestinian statehood, Gaza and the future of the two-state solution remains deeply polarised.

Abbas was also denied a visa last year and addressed the UN by video.

The latest decision therefore represents more than a travel restriction. It raises an enduring diplomatic question about how the United States balances its control over entry into its territory with its obligations as host of the United Nations.

The immediate consequence is that Abbas will again be absent physically from the UN chamber, although Palestinian representation at the organisation continues.
