King’s College Concession: FG Assures No Automatic Fee Hike

Nigeria’s King’s College controversy has taken another turn, with the Federal Government moving to calm fears that the new management arrangement could make the 117-year-old institution unaffordable.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Federal Government has said the concession of King’s College, Lagos, to its Old Boys’ Association does not automatically provide for an increase in school fees.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, also clarified that the government has not sold or privatised the school.

Under the agreement, the King’s College Old Boys’ Association is expected to finance rehabilitation, modernisation, operation and maintenance, while the Federal Government retains legal ownership and regulatory powers.

Alausa explained that the agreement does not prescribe an automatic fee increase, although it also does not create a permanent freeze on fees.

Admissions will continue under Unity College policies, with national representation and merit remaining part of the process.

The clarification comes amid strong opposition from parents and workers. The controversy has already affected the resumption of Federal Government Unity Colleges, with parents and workers protesting the concession and expressing fears that the arrangement could eventually spread to other schools.

The government’s position therefore leaves two issues at the centre of the debate: how the school will be financed and managed, and how affordability and public access will be protected.

Any change to fees or admissions will need to be measured against the government’s continuing regulatory responsibility and the public character of the institution.

For parents, students and staff, the key test will be whether the new arrangement improves infrastructure without weakening access to quality public education, ValidViewNetwork reports.
