YAOUNDÉ — Cameroon’s 93-year-old President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, returned to the capital on August 20 after more than 10 weeks abroad, ending what officials had initially described as a “brief private stay in Europe” that became the longest recorded absence of his more than 43-year presidency.

Biya left Yaoundé on June 7, 2026, accompanied by First Lady Chantal Biya and senior aides. His office framed the trip as short and private. He remained in Geneva, Switzerland, for roughly 73 to 74 days before flying back on a chartered flight that landed at Nsimalen International Airport in the late afternoon. State media and international reports showed him waving from a vehicle as a motorcade carried him toward the Etoudi Unity Palace, greeted by ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement supporters lining the streets. He was not shown descending from the aircraft and held no public briefing.

The prolonged stay in Geneva, where Biya has long maintained a preferred residence at the InterContinental Genève (an IHG property), revived familiar questions about his health, the practical exercise of power, and succession in a country where authority remains highly centralized. Government spokesmen repeatedly insisted he continued to govern from abroad, signing decrees—including a military leadership reshuffle—and was not hospitalized, despite earlier media reports of medical treatment.

Opposition voices described an “institutional vacuum” and a nation running on “autopilot,” noting that a new government and the recently restored vice-presidential post remained unfilled.

For decades Biya has spent extended periods in Geneva, frequently occupying the hotel’s 16th floor—roughly 20 rooms and suites with views toward Lake Geneva, Mont Blanc, and the United Nations European headquarters—along with additional rooms for an entourage often numbering around 60. Former hotel managers and investigative reporting have described the floor being cleared for the presidential party, with bills historically estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars per day and paid in cash.

Independent estimates for the recent stay alone placed accommodation costs in the billions of CFA francs, though the presidency has not released official figures. The pattern of lengthy “private visits” has drawn criticism for decades, with cumulative hotel expenses previously calculated in the tens of millions of dollars.

Biya has ruled since November 1982. He secured a controversial eighth term in the October 2025 election, officially taking 53.7 percent against main challenger Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s 35.2 percent. The result, confirmed by the Constitutional Council, triggered protests, deadly clashes with security forces, and claims of irregularities that the authorities rejected.

Sworn in the following month for a seven-year mandate that could keep him in office until he is nearly 100, Biya remains Africa’s longest-serving elected leader after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang. His advanced age, limited public appearances, and frequent foreign stays have made succession a sensitive, largely unspoken issue; a vice-presidential position reintroduced in 2026 has yet to be filled.

Cameroon faces persistent challenges: Anglophone separatist conflict in the northwest and southwest, Boko Haram threats in the Far North, economic pressures, and youth frustration over limited opportunity. Biya’s return temporarily quieted immediate speculation about a power vacuum, yet the episode underscored the opacity that has long surrounded the presidency. Authorities maintain the head of state remains fully in command; critics continue to ask how effectively a nation of nearly 30 million can be directed from a luxury hotel floor thousands of kilometres away—or, after this latest homecoming, how long before the next departure.

As of mid-September 2026, Biya is back in Cameroon. The InterContinental Genève remains the well-documented venue of many earlier sojourns from which he has historically directed affairs. The latest absence, longer than any previous one, has once again placed questions of health, continuity, and democratic accountability at the centre of national conversation.
