King’s College Concession Row: Workers Reject Suspension, Demand Reversal

A government resolution was supposed to calm the storm at King’s College, Lagos. Instead, the controversy has found another front.

The Federal Government has announced measures to address the crisis at the historic school, including an assurance that affected staff will not be dismissed.

But workers have rejected the suspension of industrial action, meaning the dispute over the institution’s proposed concession remains far from settled.

Among the assurances announced was that workers would not be dismissed. Instead, their deployment would be handled according to established guidelines.

The decision was aimed at addressing concerns among staff who feared that the controversy surrounding the proposed concession could lead to job losses.

But the workers have not accepted the development as the end of the matter.

The Joint Workers Council of the Federal Ministry of Education rejected the suspension of industrial action announced by the TUC and maintained that the fundamental issues surrounding King’s College had not been resolved.

At the heart of the dispute is the proposed concession of the school and the manner in which the process is being handled.

The workers’ position means that the controversy now has two connected questions. One concerns the future management of the institution, while the other concerns the rights and status of its workers.

King’s College is one of Nigeria’s historic federal secondary schools, making the dispute larger than an ordinary workplace disagreement.

Any decision concerning its management, funding, ownership arrangements or workforce is likely to have implications for students, parents, staff and the wider education system.

The Federal Government’s latest assurance may therefore address one immediate fear without necessarily resolving the larger disagreement.

If workers have legitimate objections, those objections should be handled through lawful industrial and administrative channels.

The future of an institution with such a long history should ultimately be determined by law, transparent procedure and the educational interest of the students, not by confrontation.
