Super Eagles and Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi has added a significant academic milestone to his professional football career, graduating yesterday from the PFA Business School with a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship, awarded with Merit.

The Nigerian international announced the achievement on social media, sharing photographs from the graduation ceremony and describing it as “another proud moment for me off the pitch.” In his post, Awoniyi emphasised his long-held belief that a playing career should not preclude continued learning.

“I have always believed that being a footballer shouldn’t stop you from being a student of the game, and education has become an important part of that journey for me,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone at the PFA Business School, the lecturers and my colleagues I had the opportunity to learn alongside. And a special thank you to my family and friends for their encouragement and support throughout. Still playing. Still learning. The journey continues.”

The two-year part-time programme, delivered by the Professional Footballers’ Association in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, is designed to equip current and former players with the specialised knowledge required for modern sporting director roles. Co-directed by former FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and experienced football executive Les Reed, the course covers complex areas of football operations, strategy, governance, player recruitment, data analysis and long-term club development. Teaching combines virtual sessions with face-to-face modules in London, allowing elite players to balance study with match commitments.

Awoniyi’s latest qualification builds on earlier academic successes. He previously earned a diploma in Business and Marketing from the London School of International Business and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Buckinghamshire New University. The new postgraduate diploma marks his third formal qualification and positions him among a growing number of Premier League players investing in education to prepare for careers beyond the pitch. Fellow PFA Business School alumni include high-profile figures such as Yoane Wissa, Jordan Henderson and Ben Davies.

The 29-year-old Ilorin-born forward joined Coventry City from Nottingham Forest in August. After four seasons at the City Ground, where he scored 23 goals in 103 appearances, the move offered a fresh start under manager Frank Lampard. While his early performances for the newly promoted side have included a recent red card, Awoniyi continues to balance top-flight demands with his studies.

His commitment reflects a wider trend among professional footballers who recognise the importance of preparing for life after playing.

The PFA Business School was established to support exactly that transition, offering programmes tailored to the realities of elite sport. By completing the Global Football Sport Directorship diploma while remaining an active Super Eagles and Premier League player, Awoniyi has demonstrated that excellence on the field and intellectual development off it need not be mutually exclusive.

As he continues his career with Coventry and Nigeria, the newly qualified graduate has made clear that his education remains an ongoing priority. For a player who has already navigated clubs across Germany and England, the diploma represents both personal achievement and strategic preparation for the next chapter in football.
