Moreno Laughs Off ChatGPT Claims, Takes South Korea Helm

​Newly appointed South Korea interim coach Robert Moreno has firmly dismissed persistent rumors that he relied on artificial intelligence to manage games, calling the claims a distorted narrative designed to cause harm.

​The 48-year-old Spaniard—the first of his nationality to manage the East Asian powerhouse—took over the reins following a turbulent period for the national team. South Korea has been without a permanent head coach since Hong Myung-bo stepped down in the wake of a disappointing group-stage exit at the North American World Cup in June. Hong’s tenure ended amid heavy fan backlash—sparked partly by his decision to bench captain Son Heung-min during a crucial match against South Africa—and a subsequent police raid on the Korea Football Association (KFA) headquarters regarding the hiring process.

​Speaking to media on Monday, Moreno shifted focus away from past administrative scandals and his previous stint with Russian club Sochi—where former executives alleged he leaned on ChatGPT for logistics and player scouting. Dismissing the viral reports as entirely false and taken out of context, Moreno emphasized that while modern technical tools assist with data processing, all tactical choices rest squarely with his coaching staff.

​Looking ahead, Moreno has wasted no time asserting his vision, naming a star-studded squad for upcoming friendlies against Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Uzbekistan. The roster features prominent European and MLS-based stars, including captain Son Heung-min, Atlético Madrid’s Lee Kang-in, and Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae.

​With his interim position subject to evaluation ahead of January’s Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, Moreno stressed that his primary objective is simple: restoring pride and putting a winning smile back on the faces of South Korean supporters.
