A 45-year-old Nigerian man, Obinwa Obichukwu, has been handed a two-year prison sentence by the Inner London Crown Court following a conviction for two counts of sexual assault.
The sentencing, delivered on July 21, concludes a thorough investigation by the British Transport Police (BTP) into attacks carried out at the busy Euston railway station. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court instituted a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and mandated that Obichukwu remain on the United Kingdom sex offenders register for the same duration.
Case Background
Court proceedings revealed that the offences took place on the evening of August 20, 2023. Obichukwu approached a lone female victim as she walked toward Euston station, initially engaging her in conversation about her music before putting his arm around her shoulder and soliciting her to accompany him home.
As the victim attempted to distance herself along Euston Road, Obichukwu persisted by repeatedly grabbing her hand and declaring affection. He subsequently blocked her entry at the station entrance and carried out the first assault.
Although the victim managed to descend toward the London Underground platforms via the escalator, the perpetrator followed her and launched a second assault near the ticket barriers. The victim successfully pushed him away, escaped the premises, and promptly reported the incident.
Investigation and Conviction
BTP officers utilized victim testimonies and comprehensive CCTV footage to track the suspect to his residence on Armstrong Close, Hertfordshire, where he was subsequently arrested.
During the trial, Obichukwu mounted a defense claiming the interactions were consensual. However, the jury rejected the defense, leading to his conviction in January.
Investigating officers underscored the gravity of the offenses and the force’s zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence. Detective Constable Daniel Burke characterized the offender as a predator who intentionally targeted a vulnerable commuter.

”Obinwa Obichukwu is a sexual predator who targeted a lone woman and attacked her at a busy London station,” Burke stated. “He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately the jury saw straight through his lies and he’s now behind bars where he belongs.”
The British Transport Police continue to urge the public to report incidents of violence, harassment, or intimidation on transit networks by utilizing emergency text services.
