Fake Cleric and Wife in Court Over Romance Scam and Blackmail

ACCRA — A sophisticated romance fraud scheme spanning five years has collapsed following the arrest of a Ghanaian man who allegedly weaponized religious deception, forged family relationships, and intimate blackmail to swindle multiple women out of thousands of dollars.

The Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng, who operated under the guise of a Christian pastor leading virtual congregations on Instagram. Investigators state that Kwarteng systematically targeted unsuspecting women, manipulating them with calculated declarations that divine revelation had marked them out as his future wives.

According to police findings, the suspect went to extraordinary lengths to cement his ruse, moving past digital courtship to meet victims’ families in person and presenting symbolic promise rings. Once trust was established, the operation allegedly pivoted into exploitation.

Authorities revealed that Kwarteng obtained intimate photographs of several victims, subsequently utilizing the material to extract hush money through blackmail. Beyond extortion, the suspect expanded his financial footprint by drawing victims into a fraudulent venture involving the importation of vehicle tyres. Under the guise of shipping and clearing shipping containers filled with stock, he collected substantial sums of money before cutting off all communication.

Compounding the psychological toll on the victims, court documents disclose that Kwarteng shared the compromising images with his wife, Sally Akosua Amoasah, who allegedly participated by directly threatening the targeted women.

Thus far, seven victims have come forward to file formal complaints, with active investigations establishing a timeline of offenses reaching back to 2021.

Kwarteng and Amoasah appeared before the Accra Circuit Court 1 facing multiple felony charges, including conspiracy, defrauding by false pretences, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. The presiding judge remanded Kwarteng into police custody until August 6, 2026, while granting bail to Amoasah.

Law enforcement authorities believe the current tally of complainants represents only a fraction of the total victims. The Ghana Police Service has issued a public appeal urging anyone who encountered similar fraudulent behavior involving the suspects to report immediately to the nearest police station to strengthen the ongoing prosecution.
