The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has instructed its Ekiti State chapters to initiate widespread mobilization for peaceful demonstrations. This directive follows the controversial remand of James Adio, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).
NANS leadership has labeled the court-ordered detention a blatant miscarriage of justice, asserting that Adio originally approached the magistrate court as the complainant in a matter concerning the non-consensual recording and circulation of private media.
Core Allegations and Legal Twist
According to NANS National President Akinteye Babatunde and an open letter issued by Head of Administration Owolewa Taiwo, the case underwent an unexpected procedural shift before Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun of the Fajuyi Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti.
- The Original Complaint: Adio reportedly sought legal redress against cyberbullying and the unlawful publication of private, consensual media featuring him and another adult.
- The Judicial Shift: Rather than focusing on the cyberbullying allegations, the proceedings shifted toward the private conduct of the involved parties.
- The Remand Order: Magistrate Adeosun subsequently ordered the remand of Adio alongside the defendants until August 4, 2026.
NANS has heavily criticized the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP)—led by Akinlabi O.O.—and the Directorate of Citizenship Rights (H.A. Adeyemi), alleging they unfairly highlighted university disciplinary actions during the hearing. NANS maintained that Adio’s earlier university suspension was entirely unrelated to the current suit and that he has since been fully exonerated and reinstated by the FUOYE senate.
Demands and Planned Actions
Accusing the court and the state’s legal leadership of losing judicial neutrality, the student body has outlined several strict demands:
- Immediate recusal of Magistrate Adeosun from the case.
- Reassignment of the lawsuit to an alternative judge.
- An independent administrative review of Adio’s ongoing remand order.
- A formal investigation into the conduct of the DPP and the Director of Citizenship Rights.
NANS warned that failure to address these concerns promptly will result in formal petitions to the National Judicial Council (NJC) alongside sustained peaceful protests at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the Ministry of Justice.
As of press time, the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice has not issued an official response regarding the allegations.
