A Nigerian nurse, Emmanuel Ndubuisi, has received the prestigious Cavell Star Award in the United Kingdom after his heroic intervention saved a patient’s life during a fire incident at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The incident, which occurred in August 2025, involved a female patient in her 50s who accidentally ignited a fire while attempting to vape in her hospital bed. The situation became critical because the patient was connected to an oxygen supply, which accelerated the flames and caused them to spread to the patient’s head and surrounding equipment.
Heroic Intervention
Ndubuisi, who was on duty at the time, acted with remarkable decisiveness. Despite being “covered in smoke and terrified,” he chose to confront the blaze rather than retreat. He successfully disconnected the patient’s oxygen supply before using a fire extinguisher to bring the flames under control, preventing a potential catastrophe for both the ward and its occupants.
Reflecting on the experience, Ndubuisi described the event as one of the most frightening moments of his professional career. “I had to do one thing—either run off or turn that oxygen off. I’m incredibly grateful to receive this award. It’s a real honour and motivates me to keep doing my best for our patients and colleagues every day,” he stated.

Recognition and Safety Warnings
The Cavell Star Award is a national honour presented to nursing staff who demonstrate exceptional care, dedication, and courage. Karen Sheard, the Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, praised Ndubuisi as “the very best of our profession”.
Following the incident, hospital authorities have renewed their warnings regarding the dangers of smoking and vaping within medical facilities. Officials highlighted that vaping is strictly prohibited inside buildings and near doorways, particularly where oxygen equipment is in use, as it poses a severe fire risk. The Trust confirmed that the patient involved sustained burns to her head but escaped more serious injuries thanks to the quick response of Ndubuisi and his colleagues.
