Enugu ‘Prophet’ Sentenced to Prison Over N136.4 Million Investment Scam

A self-styled prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as “Prophet Sunday Koboko,” has been sentenced to one year in prison by Justice H. O. Eya of the Enugu State High Court for orchestrating a massive financial fraud amounting to N136,436,000.

The conviction follows a thorough investigation and prosecution by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Ajuluchukwucheya, who presided over a ministry in Enugu, faced a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretenses and stealing.

The Scheme and Deception

The court heard that between 2023 and February 2025, the convict operated a sophisticated deception scheme, targeting his own congregation. He falsely claimed to have won a staggering N30 billion in a “Baba Ijebu” lottery. Leveraging this lie, he induced his church members to “invest” in his scheme, promising significant dividends that never materialized.

The investigation into his activities was triggered by multiple petitions, including one from Mrs. Ngene Nkiruka Jane. She alleged that Ajuluchukwucheya exploited her vulnerability following the death of her husband, claiming he had the spiritual power to resurrect the deceased. In total, she paid the “prophet” N6.7 million for the alleged resurrection and his fraudulent investment scheme.

Another victim, Okey Uwakwe, reported being swindled out of N6,231,400 under the pretense that the convict could perform spiritual rituals to compel his brother, who had been abroad since 1997, to return to Nigeria.

Modus Operandi

Beyond the primary investment fraud, investigators uncovered a pattern of exploitation within his ministry. The convict allegedly sold various “spiritual products” to members under the guise of guaranteeing prosperity. Items sold included:

• Miracle stickers
• Spiritual dragons
• Holy Ghost Thunder

Judicial Pronouncement and Restitution

Upon his arraignment, Ajuluchukwucheya entered a guilty plea to the two-count charge, which falls under Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

Justice Eya sentenced the convict to one year of imprisonment, with an option to pay a fine of N500,000. Crucially, the court ordered the permanent forfeiture of the convict’s landed property—specifically, property covered by a Customary Certificate of Occupancy registered as No. 92, page 92, Volume 512 of the Enugu Land Registry.

The court mandated that this property be sold, with the resulting proceeds utilized as restitution for his victims, ensuring a measure of financial recovery for those who suffered from his deceptive practices. The prosecution was led by ACE II Rotimi Ajobiewe of the EFCC.
