LOS ANGELES — In a bizarre and emotionally charged legal twist, Nick Reiner—the 32-year-old son of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner—has filed a court petition demanding access to a $1.5 million trust fund established by the very parents he is accused of brutally murdering.

The civil petition, filed in Los Angeles County Probate Court on Monday, seeks the immediate release of mandatory distributions that Nick claims are being wrongfully withheld by trustee Paul Kanin. According to court documents, Nick argues that the funds are lawfully his and are urgently needed to rehire top-tier celebrity defense attorney Alan Jackson to fight his pending double-murder charges.

”Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths. But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation,” the petition states, emphasizing that the suspect is presumed innocent and is legally entitled to mount a defense using his own assets.

A Stalled Inheritance and a Frozen Defense

The petition outlines a specific distribution schedule established in the 1993 trust, which mandates that Nick receive half of the $1.5 million principal upon turning 30, and the remaining half when he turns 35. Despite having passed his 30th birthday two years ago, Nick alleges he never received the initial payout.

According to the filing, Kanin has offered a “shifting series of excuses” for withholding the money, including subjective, unsubstantiated concerns regarding Nick’s competence to manage wealth. More recently, the trustee indicated that no funds would be released until Nick’s guilt or innocence is formally adjudicated in criminal court.

The financial gridlock directly impacted Nick’s criminal case. He initially retained Alan Jackson—the prominent defense attorney known for handling high-stakes, celebrity litigation—but Jackson was forced to withdraw in January after the trustee refused to pay his firm’s legal fees. The court documents also reveal that Nick’s surviving siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to help cover the prominent attorney’s retainer but subsequently reversed their decision. Jackson submitted a declaration alongside the new petition, stating his firm stands “ready, willing, and able” to resume Nick’s defense the moment the trust funds are cleared.

In the meantime, Nick has been forced to rely on Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene to represent him against heavy state prosecutors.

Irreparable Prejudice Behind Bars

Operating from the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, where he is being held without bail, Nick claims that the trustee’s ongoing delay is inflicting “irreparable harm” upon his constitutional right to adequate counsel.

His legal team emphasizes that “time is of the essence,” noting that every week Jackson is kept off the case is another week lost for critical trial investigation and preparation. Furthermore, Nick claims the financial freeze has left him completely destitute, lacking the personal funds to purchase basic jailhouse necessities like soap and socks.

The petition strongly criticizes Kanin, accusing him of draining the $1.5 million fund to pay for external lawyers to fight Nick’s requests. The 32-year-old is now seeking a formal accounting of the trust alongside unspecified financial damages from the trustee.

The Underlying Tragedy

The high-profile probate clash stems from the horrific events of December 14, 2025. On that afternoon, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead from multiple sharp-force knife wounds in the master bedroom of their $13.5 million Brentwood mansion.

Nick was arrested near the University of Southern California campus hours after his sister, Romy, discovered the scene. Prosecutors with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office have since leveled six felony counts against him, including two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances for multiple murders and the use of a deadly weapon. Nick entered a plea of not guilty during his February arraignment.

While the criminal justice system grinds toward a September 15 preliminary hearing, the probate court must now decide whether an individual accused of patricide can rightfully compel the release of his victims’ money to fund his escape from the witness stand.

This footage captures the immediate aftermath of the horrific incident, documenting the night law enforcement located and arrested Nick Reiner in connection with the fatal stabbing of his parents.
