ABUJA, NIGERIA — President Bola Tinubu and the United Nations have led global tributes following the passing of Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (retd.), an iconic military diplomat and the first African to serve as the United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations.

Gen. Obiakor passed away at an Abuja hospital on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the age of 75, following a massive stroke suffered days earlier.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late general as an “outstanding patriot” and a “shining example of Nigerian excellence” whose strategic contributions to global stability would endure for generations.

”General Obiakor’s leadership in various peacekeeping missions and his commitment to conflict resolution helped strengthen the reputation of the Nigerian Armed Forces on the global stage. He served our nation with distinction and carried the banner of Africa with dignity in the international arena,” Tinubu stated.

A Historic International Legacy

Gen. Obiakor’s military career was defined by pioneering achievements on the international stage. In May 2008, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed him as the Military Adviser for all UN peacekeeping operations worldwide. In this capacity, he oversaw the deployment of over 110,000 personnel globally, becoming the first military official to simultaneously hold the concurrent rank of UN Assistant Secretary-General.

Prior to his historic assignment at the UN Headquarters in New York, Obiakor served as the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) after being appointed by then-Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2005. During his tenure in Liberia, he was highly lauded for negotiating historic joint border patrols between Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire, and for overseeing the deployment of the UN’s first-ever all-female Indian police contingent.

At a press briefing in New York on Friday, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed deep condolences to Obiakor’s family and the Government of Nigeria, praising his lifelong professionalism and unwavering commitment to international security.

From Zaria to Global Prominence

Born on February 18, 1951, in Zaria, Kaduna State, to a working-class family, Obiakor traced his roots to the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He began his military journey at the Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, in 1963, before gaining admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1971 as a member of the elite 10th Regular Course—a cohort that heavily shaped modern Nigerian military doctrine.

Commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1973, he steadily rose through the ranks through an exceptional blend of battlefield competence and intellectual rigor. He earned a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan and graduated from the National War College in Abuja.

Before his high-profile UN engagements, Obiakor served domestically as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Second Mechanized Division in Ibadan and as the Chief of Administration at Army Headquarters. His international reputation blossomed much earlier during the West African regional interventions, where he commanded the ECOMOG Artillery Brigade in Liberia between 1996 and 1997 and coordinated the historic 1997 Liberian elections.

Lifetime Service Beyond Retirement

Following his formal retirement from the Nigerian Army in 2011, Gen. Obiakor remained a highly sought-after global arbiter. The United Nations repeatedly tapped his expertise to lead high-level investigation panels in complex conflict zones.

Among his final global assignments, he chaired the UN Board of Inquiry into the killings of Burundian refugees in Kamanyola, DRC, in 2018, and led the UN Secretary-General’s investigative board into the destruction of humanitarian facilities in North-West Syria between 2019 and 2020. Locally, he chaired the Whitepaper Drafting Committee for the revised Nigerian National Defence Policy in 2015.

In recognition of his stellar service to the nation and humanity, he was decorated with numerous medals, including the National Honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).

President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Obiakor family, the people and government of Anambra State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the global peacekeeping community, praying for the eternal repose of the general’s soul.
