OGUN, NIGERIA — A fatal road accident claimed the life of an unidentified male pedestrian on Sunday afternoon after he was struck down by a commercial Toyota Coaster bus at the Imowo axis along the Imowo-Ibadan Road, inward Ijebu Ode.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 4:45 PM, triggered severe gridlock along the busy corridor as the stationary commuter bus obstructed the flow of traffic on the single lane currently available to motorists.
Construction Diversion Blamed for Fatal Misstep
According to data compiled by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the tragedy was largely fueled by a lack of pedestrian vigilance navigating temporary traffic adjustments.
Ongoing road rehabilitation works along the Imowo-Ibadan axis had forced traffic officials to divert all inward and outward vehicular movement onto a single, shared lane.
Confirming the incident on Monday, TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi stated that eyewitness accounts indicated the victim cross-referenced traffic poorly before stepping into the active lane.
”According to eyewitness accounts, the pedestrian forgot to check the other side of the road before crossing. There is an active diversion to one lane due to ongoing road rehabilitation on that axis,” Akinbiyi noted.
Emergency Response and Traffic Cleared
The impact killed the male pedestrian instantly. No other passengers inside the Toyota Coaster bus or bystanders sustained injuries.
First responders, including TRACE operatives and police officers attached to the Obalende Division, were deployed to the scene to manage the ensuing traffic backlog and avert secondary crashes.
The emergency teams successfully moved the deceased into an Ogun State Ambulance Services (OGSAS) vehicle. The body has since been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode.
