A massive manhunt is underway in southern Turkey after a teenage gunman opened fire at a restaurant and a secondary location on Monday, killing four people and wounding eight others.
The attack occurred just north of Tarsus, a town situated roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of the port city of Mersin. According to Turkish news agencies DHA and IHA, the assailant—identified as a 17-year-old youth armed with a shotgun—burst into a local restaurant and opened fire on diners, killing two people on the spot.
The shooter then claimed two more lives at a separate location nearby before fleeing the scene in a getaway vehicle.
Widespread Manhunt Underway
Turkish security forces have deployed a massive response to track down the fugitive teenager. Law enforcement officials have locked down major transit routes out of Tarsus, utilizing ground units and police helicopters to comb the rural and suburban outskirts of Mersin.
Medical teams rushed the eight wounded survivors to nearby hospitals. The current condition of the victims has not yet been released by medical authorities.
A Rising Tide of Youth Violence
While a definitive motive for Monday’s bloodshed has not yet been established by investigators, the tragedy marks a worrying escalation of youth-led gun violence across Turkey.
The country is still reeling from a pair of high-profile shooting attacks carried out by teenagers just last month. The first incident left 16 people injured, while the second—a chilling assault at a vocational high school in southeastern Turkey—claimed 10 lives, most of whom were young schoolchildren.
The back-to-back tragedies have intensified public debate within Turkey regarding gun accessibility, youth radicalization, and the psychological fallout facing the nation’s teenagers. Local prosecutors in Mersin have launched a formal investigation into the shooting as the nationwide dragnet for the 17-year-old suspect continues.
