The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has signaled a significant escalation in its aerial campaign against insurgents in the North-East. Air Vice Marshal (AVM) MC Ekwueme, the recently appointed Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Tactical Air Command, concluded a high-stakes, four-day frontline assessment in Maiduguri, declaring that the military will maintain a “relentless onslaught” until stability is restored.
The visit, spanning January 29 to February 1, 2026, marks AVM Ekwueme’s first major operational oversight mission since taking command on January 7. It underscores a strategic pivot directed by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to intensify the tempo of Operation HADIN KAI.

Strategic Hub: Maiduguri at the Core
Describing NAF Base Maiduguri as the “nerve center” for airpower projection, AVM Ekwueme emphasized that the current phase of the conflict demands constant adaptability. During the visit, the AOC received comprehensive intelligence and operational briefings from:
- Air Commodore Mohammed Buba Ahmed (Air Component Commander): Detailed the current success rate of precision strikes and ongoing reconnaissance missions.
- Group Captain KO Nwachukwu (Commander 105 Composite Group): Outlined the fortified “Base Defence Architecture” designed to protect critical air assets from asymmetric threats.
Readiness and Personnel Welfare
Beyond the strategy rooms, the AOC conducted a rigorous inspection of combat aircraft, maintenance hangars, and support facilities. The goal was clear: ensuring the NAF can sustain high-frequency combat sorties without technical fatigue.

In a “durbar” (town hall) with frontline personnel, AVM Ekwueme struck a balance between a commander’s mandate and a mentor’s care. He demanded absolute discipline and professionalism but countered the high-pressure expectations with a firm promise: the NAF leadership is prioritizing the welfare and safety of those in the cockpit and on the flight line.

As the North-East remains a volatile theater, this “maiden charge” by the AOC Tactical Air Command serves as both a morale booster for the troops and a stern warning to terrorist elements: the sky over the North-East will remain an unforgiving territory for insurgents.
