The Police Service Commission (PSC) recently conducted a major promotional examination for 630 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) aiming to advance to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP). The written exams took place on September 19, 2025, at the PSC Headquarters in Abuja, with all candidates subjected to rigorous testing designed to strengthen meritocracy and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Supreme Court Justice and the Commissioner representing the Judiciary on the PSC, officially opened the exams and emphasized the importance of continuous learning and mental capacity enhancement for effective police service. He told the DSPs that future promotions will hinge largely on their examination performances, reflecting a shift toward more merit-based advancement in the force.

The PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, reiterated the necessity of the promotion exams, noting that this process aims to restore the public’s confidence in the Police Force, which has suffered from perceived systemic rot and a lack of transparent promotion mechanisms. Argungu underscored that promotions henceforth will be contingent on merit and competence, ensuring that officers who assume higher ranks are fully prepared to meet 21st-century policing challenges.
The exam is part of broader promotion exercises conducted by the PSC recently, which also involved over 400 senior officers—including Chief Superintendents and Superintendents—who were screened and interviewed for advancement to higher ranks. These reforms demonstrate the Commission’s commitment to building a dynamic, efficient, and credible Police Force capable of safeguarding lives and property across Nigeria effectively.

The PSC has made it clear that failing the promotion exams will have direct consequences, with no second chances offered, as the Commission remains resolute in upholding high standards for police promotions going forward. This approach aims to professionalize the force, making merit and character the foundation of career advancement.
The ongoing promotion examinations for various police ranks reflect a significant reform agenda by the current administration to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, professional security institution fit to tackle contemporary security challenges
