30-Year Murder Mystery Unlocked

​MANCHESTER — More than three decades after a brutal gang attack shattered a family home, a 53-year-old man has been handed a life sentence after walking into a police station and confessing to the murder.

​Robert Lloyd appeared at Manchester Crown Court following the lifting of strict reporting restrictions. He was ordered to serve a minimum term of 17 years behind bars after pleading guilty to the 1994 slaying of 26-year-old Michael Kenneth McDermott.

​The horrific ordeal unfolded late on the evening of November 9, 1994, inside a residence on Ashville Terrace in the Moston area of Manchester. Lloyd, alongside a group of masked men armed with baseball bats, knives, and other weapons, forced their way into the property.

​Mr McDermott, who was resting on the sofa, was subjected to a ferocious assault that left him with fatal stab wounds and severe blunt-force trauma to the head. While family members—including a young mother and her baby—fled in terror upstairs, the assailants escaped across the road to a waiting getaway car.

​Although Lloyd was initially arrested shortly after the incident in November 1994, he was released without charge, leaving the case cold for decades. However, consumed by guilt, Lloyd walked into Ashton Police Station, confessed to his participation, and admitted to stabbing the victim in the leg during the raid.

​Greater Manchester Police’s major investigation team swiftly reopened the file. Sentencing Lloyd, Mr Justice Goose condemned the act as a “horror show” against a vulnerable man.

​With the case now blown wide open, detectives have launched a desperate fresh appeal to track down the remaining members of the lynch mob. Detective Inspector Rachel Smith emphasized that the investigation remains very much active.

​”Michael’s death 30 years ago was devastating for his loved ones and has left unanswered questions ever since,” Detective Inspector Smith said. “Our investigation into the circumstances of Michael’s tragic death are very much active and I urge anyone with information to please come forward. I can assure you, it’s not too late.”
