A retired paediatrician whose evidence helped secure the conviction of Lucy Letby has admitted he is no longer certain that she—or any criminal—committed the murders.
Dr John Gibbs, one of the primary consultants at the Countess of Chester Hospital who originally raised alarms about the nurse, stated that a retrial could be the most appropriate path forward. He noted that if Letby is imprisoned for crimes she did not commit, the situation is completely appalling.
When asked if he remains convinced that Letby killed the infants, Dr Gibbs stated he was not, adding that he holds a small concern that deliberate harm may never have occurred. However, he also noted he does not believe anyone else was harming the babies.
The comments follow the publication of Lady Justice Thirlwall’s 822-page report, which detailed systemic failures and a complete breakdown in hospital governance and safeguarding. The inquiry concluded that management failed to act promptly or properly investigate suspicions when they were first raised by clinicians.
Meanwhile, Letby—who is serving 15 whole-life terms—has reportedly grown increasingly reclusive inside HMP Bronzefield. Sources indicate she has been spending extended time alone in her cell following the death of consultant Dr Mark Deakin, with whom she had previously exchanged hundreds of messages.
