The recovery of victims and wreckage from the Nigerian Air Force aircraft that crashed at Igbokoda, Ondo State, has been severely hampered by deep swamp, thick mangroves and murky waters, more than 24 hours after the tragedy.

The ATR-42 aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area on Monday while on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.

Recovery teams, Navy personnel, police officers, emergency officials and local divers have been working around the difficult terrain, but the aircraft is reportedly deeply submerged, making access to the main wreckage extremely difficult.

The Nigerian Air Force has since confirmed that 25 people were aboard the aircraft, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers, and that there were no survivors.

WRECKAGE DEEP INSIDE SWAMP

Footage from the crash scene shows rescuers and local residents attempting to navigate the swamp around the crash location.

Residents told journalists that they rushed towards the area after hearing a loud sound but could not reach the aircraft because much of the wreckage had sunk into the swamp. One local diver said residents used canoes to get close enough to see the wreckage but were unable to carry out an effective rescue.

Another resident said community members, including men and women, attempted to reach the aircraft but were unable to extract anyone because the wreckage was deeply buried in the swamp. The location is reportedly about 500 metres from the Naval Base.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT NEEDED

Ondo State Police Commissioner Felix Ohagwu described the terrain as extremely challenging. He said security personnel had to use canoes to access the area and that additional technical support and heavier equipment were being awaited to pull the wreckage from the water.

NEMA has activated a specialised search-and-rescue team, while the state government has deployed medical personnel and ambulances from hospitals in Ilaje and Okitipupa.

Swamp buggies and other equipment are expected to assist the operation. The difficulty of the terrain also means that recovery is taking place under conditions where the preservation of evidence is critical.

BLACK BOXES YET TO BE RECOVERED

The wreckage has not been completely extracted, and the aircraft’s flight recorders have not yet been recovered. The black boxes could be crucial to the investigation because they may provide information about the aircraft’s final moments, including flight data and cockpit communications.

The cause of the crash has not been officially established.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had earlier suggested that a possible technical or mechanical problem might have contributed to the incident, but that remains an assessment rather than an official finding.

SECURITY CORDON AROUND CRASH SITE

The Navy has cordoned off the crash area, with access restricted. Some journalists attempting to enter the restricted zone were reportedly detained by naval authorities.

Officials have urged the public to stop circulating unverified material about the tragedy, saying the incident should not be politicised.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the recovery operation is now as important to the investigation as it is to the grieving families. Every recovered component, flight recorder and other piece of evidence could help establish what happened to NAF 931.

The immediate priority is therefore to recover the victims respectfully and preserve the crash site while investigators work to determine the cause of the disaster.
