OSOGBO, Osun State

For centuries, the Osun-Osogbo Festival has been more than an annual celebration. It is a living expression of Yoruba spirituality, royalty, history and identity.

Every August, thousands of worshippers, tourists, cultural enthusiasts and dignitaries converge on the ancient city of Osogbo for a tradition that has survived generations and earned global recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural event.

This year’s festival carries a unique story. At the centre of the sacred procession is Princess Alimot Moredeke Ajoke Osunbunmi, a 10-year-old royal maiden whose youthful appearance contrasts with the immense cultural responsibility she now bears as the Arugba, the revered votary maid who leads the symbolic journey to the Osun Sacred Grove.

Sacred Rites Completed Ahead of Historic Procession

ValidViewNetwork reports that Princess Alimot has successfully completed the mandatory Ifa rites required before participating in Friday’s sacred procession, clearing the final traditional hurdle ahead of one of the festival’s most anticipated events.

The rites signify spiritual preparation for the Arugba, regarded by devotees as the symbolic bridge between the people of Osogbo and Osun, the revered river deity. The completion of the rituals means the young princess is now prepared to take her place before thousands expected to witness the climax of the annual festival.

From Nine-Year-Old Maiden to Cultural Symbol

Princess Alimot first emerged as Arugba in March 2025 after traditional Ifa divination selected her from the royal lineage of the Ataoja of Osogbo. She was only nine years old when she made her first appearance during the 2025 festival.

Because of her age, however, tradition was modified. Rather than carry the sacred calabash herself, the Baba Osun, the chief priest, performed that aspect of the ritual while she participated in the procession.

This year’s procession is expected to mark another important chapter in her journey as the custodian of one of Yorubaland’s oldest ceremonial traditions.

A Tradition Older Than Modern Nigeria

The Osun-Osogbo Festival traces its origins back more than 700 years to the founding of Osogbo.

According to Yoruba oral history, the celebration commemorates the covenant between the early settlers led by Olutimehin and Osun, the river goddess, who promised protection, prosperity and fertility in return for annual sacrifices and continued reverence.

Every year, the festival follows a carefully preserved sequence of traditional rites, beginning with the cleansing of the ancient town, followed by the lighting of the historic sixteen-point lamp, royal ceremonies and spiritual observances before culminating in the colourful procession to the Osun Sacred Grove.

Since 2005, the Sacred Grove has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of its outstanding cultural, religious and historical significance.

Why the Arugba Matters

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Arugba occupies one of the most revered positions in the festival.

Chosen through traditional divination from a royal family, she carries profound symbolic importance as the bearer of communal prayers, hopes and sacrifices offered during the annual celebration.

Her journey through Osogbo’s streets to the sacred grove remains the emotional and spiritual high point of the festival, attracting thousands of visitors from across Nigeria and around the world.

Beyond its religious significance, the procession has become one of Africa’s most recognised cultural spectacles, showcasing Yoruba music, traditional attire, dance, drumming and indigenous heritage.

Culture That Continues to Unite

While religious beliefs surrounding the Osun-Osogbo Festival differ among participants, its cultural value remains widely acknowledged. The annual celebration continues to strengthen tourism, preserve Yoruba traditions and project Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to the global community.

As Princess Alimot steps forward to lead this year’s sacred procession, she carries more than tradition on her shoulders. She represents the passing of history from one generation to another, reminding the world that some cultures endure not because they resist change, but because they carefully preserve the values that define them.

For Osogbo, Friday’s procession is not merely a festival. It is another chapter in a story that has flowed with the River Osun for centuries.
