1-Year Prison Term For Abia School Guard Over Abuse of 10-Year-Old Pupil

​ABA, Abia State — A 30-year-old security guard attached to Radiant Glory Academy in Umuichichi, Aba, Chidiebere Kalu, has been handed a one-year prison sentence for sexually abusing a 10-year-old female pupil within the school premises.

​The ruling was delivered on August 5, 2026, by the Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, bringing a measure of closure to a distressing ordeal that shocked the local community.

​According to court proceedings, the case was brought before the criminal justice system following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family. Prosecutors established that the accused leveraged his position of authority at the school to target the vulnerable minor, committing acts that compromised her safety in an environment meant to foster learning and protection.

​The presiding magistrate found Kalu guilty on a two-count charge bordering on indecent assault and instilling fear in a minor.

​For the first count, the court sentenced him to one year imprisonment without the option of a fine. On the second count, he received another one-year prison term with an option of a N200,000 fine. The magistrate ordered that both sentences run concurrently.

​Child rights advocates have roundly commended the ruling as a crucial step toward accountability. Reacting to the judgment, the Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI), operating in synergy with the Abia State Chapter of the Child Protection Network (CPN), hailed the conviction as a resounding victory for child protection and the pursuit of justice.
