Former Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure has carved his name into football history, becoming the first African coach to lead a club into the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
Toure accomplished the landmark feat during his debut senior managerial campaign with Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava. Securing their spot in the expanded 36-team European elite came after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Slovenian side NK Celje following extra time, sealing a 3-2 aggregate win in the final qualifying playoff. Cristian Martinez cemented the historic qualification by netting the decisive goal in the 100th minute.
Appointed as Slovan’s head coach in June, the 43-year-old navigated his squad through a rigorous three-tier qualification route, overcoming Georgia’s Saburtalo and Sweden’s Mjallby before the playoff triumph. This achievement surpasses the previous milestone set by Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Egbo, who guided Albanian side KF Tirana into the preliminary qualifying rounds in 2020 without reaching the main tournament proper.
For Toure, who hoisted the Champions League trophy as a player with Barcelona in 2009, the milestone marks a stunning transition from the pitch to the technical area. His baptism of fire in the tournament’s newly formatted league phase begins immediately with an intimidating fixture against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
