ANGRI, Italy — A 35-year-old woman has been arrested in the Italian town of Angri after allegedly using a kitchen knife to sever her husband’s penis following a heated domestic dispute over his plans to bring a second wife into their home.
The victim, a 41-year-old Bangladeshi national whose name has been withheld, is currently being treated at the Umberto I Hospital in Nocera Inferiore. While surgeons successfully managed to stem the life-threatening hemorrhage, they confirmed on Monday that the severed organ was “permanently compromised” and could not be reattached despite it being preserved on ice by first responders.
A Nap Turned Nightmare
The couple had recently relocated from Sant’Antonio Abate to a larger residence in Angri. According to local police reports, the husband had secured the new home specifically to accommodate his first wife, whom he intended to move from Bangladesh to Italy.
The move reportedly incensed his second wife. On Sunday afternoon, while the man was taking a nap following lunch, the suspect allegedly attacked him with a large kitchen knife.
The victim managed to stumble onto a first-floor balcony, covered in blood and screaming for help. Two female passersby alerted the authorities and entered the home to provide emergency first aid until paramedics arrived.
Investigation and Charges
Carabinieri police, led by Commander Gianfranco Albanese, arrived at the scene to find the suspect in a “dazed state,” allegedly still holding the weapon. She was immediately taken into custody and faces charges of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Gianluca Caputo has ordered a toxicology report on the remains of the couple’s last meal to determine if the victim had been drugged or sedated prior to the attack.
Angelo Pisani, a prominent Italian lawyer and advocate against domestic violence, has offered to represent the husband pro bono, describing the incident as an act of “unprecedented and unjustifiable brutality.”
The incident has drawn comparisons to the 1993 Lorena Bobbitt case in the United States, though medical advancements in this instance were unable to rectify the physical damage. The suspect remains in detention pending a formal hearing.
