MASON, OHIO — Tennis royalty is officially heading back to the hard courts. Four years after their last competitive appearance as a tandem, iconic sisters Serena and Venus Williams have accepted a main-draw wild-card entry for the women’s doubles field at this month’s Cincinnati Open.
The announcement marks a triumphant redemptive chapter for the legendary siblings, whose much-anticipated homecoming at Wimbledon earlier this summer was heartbreakingly cut short. After accepting a wild card at the All England Club in June, 44-year-old Serena suffered a right knee injury during her opening-round singles clash against Australia’s Maya Joint. The physical setback forced the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion to withdraw from both her subsequent events and the collaborative doubles draw alongside Venus.
Now fully recovered and eager to write a new script, the duo will step onto the court together for the first time since the 2022 US Open.
A Storied Legacy
Few partnerships in sports history command the reverence of the Williams sisters. Together, they have captured 14 major doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals, terrorizing tour draws for decades while completely redefining the sport.
Though they have dominated nearly every major venue across the globe, this year’s appearance in Mason, Ohio, marks their debut as a doubles team at the prestigious WTA 1000 tune-up event.
”Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me,” Serena shared following her summer withdrawal. “I did everything I could, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready… stay tuned to a city near you.”
Prepping for New York
The homecoming carries major implications as the tennis world gears up for the final Grand Slam of the season. In addition to teaming up with her younger sister in Ohio, 46-year-old Venus has also been awarded a main-draw wild card for the Cincinnati singles tournament, boasting a solid historical footprint at the venue that includes a 2012 semifinal run.
Venus is additionally slated to feature in mixed doubles at the upcoming US Open alongside Alexander Bublik, ensuring that the family’s footprint on late-summer hard courts remains as formidable as ever.
Main-draw action for the Cincinnati Open gets underway on August 11.
