Why I switch parties —Peter Obi Explains Political Moves

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his history of switching political parties, saying his decisions were based on principle rather than convenience.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Monday, Obi said he leaves any political platform that becomes “transactional” or deviates from democratic values.

He explained that his first major defection—from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—was triggered by disagreements involving his successor in Anambra State. According to him, he chose to step aside to avoid disrupting governance.

Obi said his experience in the PDP further reinforced his concerns, alleging that internal practices in the party were often driven by personal interests rather than rules and due process.

“I cannot be part of a transactional system,” he said, adding that politics should be guided by principles and accountability.

He also cited recurring internal crises within the Labour Party as part of the reasons that affected its stability as a political platform.

The former Anambra governor noted that he is currently aligned with opposition efforts involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a broader coalition aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections.

Obi acknowledged public scrutiny over some of his political associates but maintained that current commitments to reform matter more than past affiliations.

“What is important is not what people were yesterday, but what they are today,” he said.

He added that the goal of the emerging opposition movement is to provide credible leadership and strengthen accountability in governance, stressing that he remains committed to the cause despite challenges.

Obi also described Nigeria’s political environment as one that needs deep reform, saying there is a need to “dismantle” entrenched systems that undermine good governance.

He further disclosed that efforts are ongoing to unify opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections, with the South-East playing a coordinated role in mobilization and voter engagement.
