Why Atiku’s 2027 Bid Threatens Nigeria’s Financial Future

As the clock ticks toward the 2027 general elections, political lines are hardening, and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified its scrutiny of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. In a blistering public statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party warned the electorate against entrusting the national treasury to a man whose public record it describes as a catalogue of cronyism and systemic corruption.

The fresh offensive follows closely on the heels of a ruling by an International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitration tribunal in Paris. The tribunal examined a contentious $500,000 transaction executed in January 2003 by Leno Adesanya—promoter of Sunrise Power—to Jennifer Douglas, Atiku’s wife at the time. Although the defense maintained the transfer was a private foreign-exchange transaction, the tribunal flagged the timing as a significant red flag, occurring just months before the controversial award of the multi-billion-dollar Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project contract.

The ruling has reignited fierce debates over accountability, bringing back memories of other legacy scandals. The APC pointed to a litany of historical flashpoints, including the multi-million-dollar Siemens bribery investigations, the William Jefferson congressional case in the United States, and a 2010 US Senate subcommittee report scrutinizing multi-million-dollar offshore wire transfers. These dossiers, the party argues, establish a persistent pattern of compromised public trust.

Beyond historical inquiries, the ruling party linked Atiku’s recent policy pivots to immediate economic anxieties. It severely criticized his campaign promise to reverse the current petrol subsidy removal, characterizing the proposal as a tactical ploy. According to the APC, the objective is to gain access to Nigeria’s robust foreign reserves, which have climbed past $54 billion following recent fiscal reforms.

To reinforce its position, the ruling party invoked the harsh assessment of Atiku’s former principal, former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Highlighting remarks from Obasanjo’s memoir My Watch alongside recent statements expressing regret over his 1999 choice of running mate, the statement framed Atiku as fundamentally unsuitable for supreme executive office.

As the 2027 presidential race gathers momentum, the fierce exchanges signal that the battle over stewardship of Nigeria’s economy will be fought fiercely on the terrain of past records and financial probity.
