He Was Preparing for His Final Exams. A Stray Bullet Ended His Life Instead.

Isma’il Magaji was supposed to be preparing for the final examinations that would complete his university education. Instead, the 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, was killed by a stray bullet in Niger State.

Reports obtained by ValidViewNetwork indicate that Magaji had returned to his community after an academic strike disrupted examinations at the university. He was in Wawa community in Borgu Kingdom, New Bussa, when shooting linked to a dispute over land reportedly broke out.

A military task force operating in the area was allegedly responding to the dispute when a stray bullet struck the student.

His death illustrates a recurring but often underdeveloped dimension of insecurity in Nigeria: the people who are not the intended targets but whose lives are nevertheless destroyed when armed confrontations spill into civilian spaces.

Magaji was not reported to have been involved in the dispute. He was a student waiting for his final examinations.

The tragedy also sits at the intersection of two disruptions. The university’s academic calendar had already been affected by an industrial dispute.

The insecurity that followed effectively extended the uncertainty into the community.
