The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the unfortunate loss of two lives during an altercation between motorcycle riders (okada riders) and the state task force on Sunday night.
This incident subsequently led to unrest in the Delta state capital, Asaba, on Monday.
Bright Edafe, the State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this via his official handle on Monday.
He explained that the unrest stemmed from the previous night’s altercation, with motorcycle riders protesting the fatalities by causing property damage and assaulting individuals.
Edafe further elaborated that in response to the escalating situation, the police deployed officers to maintain order and prevent further violence.
He stated, “There was a violent protest this morning by Okada riders who had an issue last night with the state task force that led to the death of two persons. They mobilised in their numbers this morning, destroying property and beating people. Hence, our men were deployed to control the situation before it turned into something else.”
Earlier reports circulating on social media depicted scenes of chaos, particularly along the Okpanam Road axis, Midwifery, in Asaba.
Videos shared online showed instances of police firing gunshots and groups of individuals blocking roads with motorcycles, adding to the tense atmosphere in the area.
