Ilorin, Nigeria – The University of Ilorin has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for its handling of the recent issues surrounding the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results. In a letter addressed to the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, praised the board’s transparency and integrity in addressing the technical errors that affected over 300,000 candidates.
The letter, dated May 15, 2025, acknowledged JAMB’s open admission of the error caused by a service provider, which led to widespread concerns and protests. Professor Egbewole stated that JAMB’s approach demonstrated courage, honesty, and a commitment to positive values, setting a commendable example for the younger generation.
UTME Results Controversy
The 2025 UTME results have been a subject of controversy after JAMB admitted that a technical glitch affected the scores of a significant number of candidates, mainly in Lagos and the South-East. According to JAMB, the error stemmed from a failed patch intended to update examination servers, impacting 379,997 candidates.
The situation has led to mixed reactions, with some stakeholders calling for a review of the examination process.
However, others, like Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, have commended Professor Oloyede for his transparency in handling the matter.
JAMB has announced that affected candidates in 157 centres will retake the examination starting Friday, May 16. The board has also assured the public that measures are being taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
