President Bola Tinubu will not travel to New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, ending weeks of uncertainty over whether he would personally attend the annual gathering.
The President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the UNGA.The development changes the composition of Nigeria’s delegation to one of the most important annual meetings of world leaders.
Tinubu’s attendance had previously been expected. Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, had said in July that the President had confirmed plans to attend.
The Presidency has now confirmed that Shettima will represent Nigeria instead.
The Vice President is expected to lead Nigeria’s participation in the diplomatic engagements surrounding the 81st General Assembly, where global leaders will discuss international security, development, climate issues, multilateral cooperation and other matters on the UN agenda.
Tinubu’s absence does not mean Nigeria will be absent from the summit. Instead, the responsibility for leading the country’s delegation shifts to the Vice President.
The change is also notable because the UNGA provides Nigeria with an important diplomatic platform for meetings with other heads of government, international institutions and potential investors.
