The Senate of the University of Ibadan (UI) has officially ratified the withdrawal of 226 undergraduate students following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 academic session. The decision, reached during a high-level meeting last Monday, targets students whose Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) fell below the mandatory 1.0 threshold.
According to internal documents and university officials, the affected students span various levels of study, from 100-level freshmen to 500-level final-year students. In line with the Senate’s directive, these students have already been barred from the university’s registration portal, effectively ending their tenure at Nigeria’s premier institution.
Faculty Breakdown: Science Hits Record Highs
A closer look at the data reveals that the Faculty of Science bore the brunt of this academic purge, recording 79 withdrawals. The Faculty of Technology followed with 45 students, while the Faculty of Agriculture saw 35 exits.
Other affected departments include:
- College of Medicine & Faculty of Education: 18 students each.
- Renewable Natural Resources: 10 students.
- Faculty of Arts: 9 students.
- Economics and Management Sciences: 4 students.
- Law & Environmental Design: 3 students each.
- Veterinary Medicine: 2 students.
The “Tsunami” Tradition
Within the UI student community, this annual exercise is colloquially known as the “Tsunami.” While the current figure of 226 is significant, it is a decrease from previous years, such as in 2018 when a staggering 408 students were asked to withdraw.
The university management maintains that these stringent academic standards are necessary to preserve the institution’s global prestige and ensure that only the most dedicated scholars proceed to graduation.
