ABUJA — United States President Donald Trump has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive leadership in combating terrorism and protecting vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
In a formal correspondence dated July 6, 2026, and released by the Nigerian Presidency through the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Trump commended his Nigerian counterpart’s unwavering resolve to tackle national security challenges.
The Washington endorsement marks a notable evolution in bilateral relations, building upon a shared security framework that has recently yielded high-profile operational successes against extremist networks.
A Shift in Washington’s Tone
The diplomatic warmth signals a substantial strengthening of ties between Abuja and Washington, following previous concerns raised by the U.S. administration regarding extremist violence targeting Christian communities.
Trump expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s proactive stance on the matter. “It is a true honor to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” Trump wrote.
The American leader also highlighted the implementation of the 2026 U.S.-Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap. As part of this strategic pact, Washington has deployed elite United States Special Operations Forces to provide advanced tactical training, enhanced intelligence-sharing capabilities, and operational support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Strategic Milestones on the Battlefield
The renewed security collaboration has already produced tangible outcomes on the ground. Security analysts point to the joint military operations executed earlier in the year—notably a May 16 precision strike targeting ISIS enclaves in the Lake Chad Basin. That coordinated offensive neutralized a top regional terror commander, Abubakar Al-Minoki (also referred to as Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki), alongside several high-ranking lieutenants.
