Two Bangladesh Army soldiers lost their lives and a supervising officer sustained critical injuries following a sudden onboard explosion during a live-fire drill at the Hathazari Field Firing Range in Chattogram.
According to an official release from the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), the fatal incident unfolded while troops were conducting routine armored gunnery exercises. Defence sources and media reports identified the armored vehicle involved as a Chinese-origin Type 59 main battle tank, though military authorities have indicated that formal confirmation of the exact technical model and the precise trigger of the blast await a comprehensive inquiry.
The critically injured officer received immediate initial medical evaluation before being airlifted via military helicopter to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka for advanced trauma care.
The Bangladesh Army has launched a high-level technical investigation to determine whether the accident stemmed from ammunition failure, mechanical malfunction, or equipment degradation within the legacy armored platform. Further updates regarding the incident are expected upon the conclusion of the military board’s findings.
