Nigerian students enrolled in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions will receive 100 megabytes of free daily data starting October 1, 2026, following a federal government initiative aimed at expanding digital education access.
Announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Abuja, the programme is designed to eliminate high internet costs as a barrier to digital learning. Major telecommunications operators, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and Globacom, are partnering with the Nigerian Communications Commission to provide the zero-rated allowance for approved educational websites, learning management systems, and digital libraries.
The framework, developed alongside the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, focuses initially on public school students before expanding to other categories of learners. Alongside this connectivity push, the Ministry of Education is advancing other digital infrastructure projects, including the geo-mapping of over 240,000 schools, the digitisation of the Annual School Census, and the deployment of Learner Identification Numbers.
Furthermore, the government disclosed plans to introduce regulations for children under 16 accessing the internet to ensure digital content remains safe, credible, and aligned with national educational standards.
