Two electrocuted as high-tension wire falls in Ekiti

Tragedy unfolded in Ogbese community, along the Ikere/Ise route in the Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti, on Thursday, as two individuals lost their lives due to electrocution.

The incident, which has plunged the town into deep mourning, occurred around 5:30 PM, when a high-tension wire belonging to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) fell from its pole following a heavy downpour.

Sources revealed that the wire, which supplies electricity from the Ikere-Ekiti axis to the community, suddenly detached from the pole shortly after the rain, posing a grave danger as it began to spark.

This alarming situation prompted residents to make distress calls to the BEDC’s business office in Ikere-Ekiti, urging immediate attention to the potential hazard. Furthermore, announcements were made on a local radio station in Ikere-Ekiti, clearly aimed at drawing the BEDC officials’ attention to the looming danger.

Tragedy struck when BEDC officials failed to respond promptly, only arriving on the scene the following morning after the unfortunate news of the two electrocutions had emerged.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased have yet to be confirmed. It was reported that the two victims were rushed to a healthcare facility in Ikere-Ekiti for urgent medical attention, though it remains unclear whether they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

In a statement, a senior official at the BEDC Ikere-Ekiti business district confirmed that they received reports of the fallen cable late on Thursday. He assured that a team of engineers from their office is currently working in the area to prevent any further incidents.
