Trump Pays $5.6M to E. Jean Carroll Following Supreme Court Ruling

​In a significant legal milestone, writer E. Jean Carroll has officially received over $5.6 million from President Donald Trump, concluding a years-long effort to secure damages awarded by a federal jury. The payment, which includes the original $5 million judgment from 2023 plus accumulated interest, was disbursed on Monday after federal courts cleared the way for the transfer.

​The funds were released from a court-held escrow account following a decisive sequence of events: the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Trump’s appeal of the verdict on June 29, and Judge Lewis A. Kaplan subsequently ordered the disbursement. Despite last-minute attempts by the president’s legal team to block the transaction—arguing that the money should remain frozen while they petition for a rehearing—federal appeals judges rejected the stay, effectively ending the delay.

​”Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” said Roberta Kaplan, the writer’s lead attorney, in a statement. “Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict.”

​The 82-year-old author, a former advice columnist, intends to place the funds into a retirement account. While her legal team successfully concluded this phase of the litigation, the broader conflict between the two parties remains active. Trump’s defense team continues to pursue a reconsideration of the Supreme Court’s decision and is separately contesting an $83.3 million judgment from a 2024 trial, in which a different jury found the president liable for additional defamatory statements.

​The initial case, which prompted this week’s payment, stemmed from Carroll’s 2019 memoir, in which she alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in a New York City department store dressing room during the mid-1990s. Trump has consistently denied the allegations, characterizing them as a politically motivated “hoax.”
