Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump’s recent commendation of Liberian President Joseph Boakai’s English proficiency has ignited a debate, drawing both criticism from across Africa and a staunch defense from the White House. The remarks were made during a White House meeting on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, with five African leaders.

During the gathering, President Trump reportedly praised President Boakai’s English, asking, “Such good English, it’s beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?” He further added, “That’s very interesting, I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.” The comments quickly drew backlash on social media and from various African voices, who found them condescending and disrespectful, particularly given that English is the official language of Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves. Many critics highlighted the historical context, suggesting the remarks were tone-deaf.
In response to the growing criticism, U.S. Senior Adviser for Africa, Massad Boulos, stepped in to defend President Trump. Boulos, who was present at the meeting, stated that “everyone was deeply appreciative of the President’s time and effort.” He further asserted that “The continent of Africa has never had such a friend in the White House as they do in President Trump.” White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly echoed this sentiment, characterizing Trump’s comment as a “heartfelt compliment.”
Adding to the nuanced reactions, Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, indicated that President Boakai took “no offense” from the remarks. She suggested that many do not fully understand the linguistic history of Africa and that President Trump might have been acknowledging Liberia’s American-influenced English accent.
The exchange underscores the complexities of diplomatic interactions and the varied interpretations of seemingly simple compliments, especially within the context of historical and cultural sensitivities.
