During the gathering, President Trump reportedly praised President Boakai’s English, asking, “Such good English, it’s beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?” He further added, “That’s very interesting, I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.” The comments quickly drew backlash on social media and from various African voices, who found them condescending and disrespectful, particularly given that English is the official language of Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves.
