The United States Mint has officially released a new gold-toned $1 coin bearing the portrait of President Donald J. Trump, breaking a near-century-old tradition that bars living individuals from appearing on American currency.
Unveiled as part of nationwide preparations to commemorate 250 years of American independence, the coin features Trump’s likeness on the obverse, designed by Chief Engraver Joseph Menna based on an official White House photograph. The reverse side depicts the Presidential Seal with the number “250” added to the eagle’s shield, alongside the traditional inscriptions of “United States of America” and “One Dollar”. Although styled as a “golden dollar,” the coin is composed of copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel rather than precious gold.
While federal statutes traditionally restrict currency portraits to deceased figures—a historical safeguard established to distance American leadership from British monarchical norms—the Treasury Department utilized design and commemorative clauses tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial to authorize the release. The move follows a rare historical precedent set in 1926 when President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on a commemorative half-dollar for the country’s 150th anniversary.

The release has sharply divided opinion. Administration officials and supporters champion the coin as a celebration of American heritage and values, noting that 250,000 special pieces struck on July 4 have been randomly distributed with a unique “July 4th” privy mark among collector bags and rolls. Conversely, critics view the rollout as another aggressive effort by the administration to permanently stamp its personal imprint on traditional federal institutions.
The coins are available directly through the U.S. Mint’s catalog, priced at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a 100-coin bag, and function as legal tender.
