The parents of a Nigerian international student have launched an impassioned appeal to United Kingdom authorities, legal institutions, and human rights bodies to review a verdict that convicted their son of robbery and blackmail.

In a statement released in Ibadan, Oyo State, Mr. Aderinkola Akinrinola and Mrs. Olayinka Akinrinola declared that their son, Oluwatobiloba Akinrinola, is completely innocent. They allege that his conviction by a UK court on June 19, 2026, rests entirely on circumstantial evidence and a flawed premise of “guilty by association.”

The Night of the Incident

Oluwatobiloba, a first-year student at Leicester University who only resumed classes in September 2025, is currently being held at Nottingham Prison. His sentencing is scheduled for July 27, 2026.

According to his parents, the conviction stems from a robbery that took place during a party on November 21, 2025. The family maintains that Oluwatobiloba’s involvement was nonexistent, presenting several key arguments from the trial records:

  • No Physical Evidence: The victims reported being robbed of their jackets and footwear. A subsequent police search of Oluwatobiloba’s apartment yielded none of the stolen items.
  • No Financial Links: Investigators uncovered evidence of victims transferring money directly to the bank accounts of other suspects, specifically Ayomide Ibraheem and the prime suspect, Richile Vagnu. No such financial tracks were found in Oluwatobiloba’s bank records.
  • Exculpatory Testimonies: Multiple victims testified in court that the student was not involved in the attack. One victim explicitly noted that Oluwatobiloba appeared to be actively trying to assist them rather than participate in the crime.
  • CCTV Discrepancies: Closed-circuit television footage played during the trial only captured Oluwatobiloba arriving at the party venue. It never placed him inside the room at the scene of the crime.

According to the student’s official statement, he briefly walked into the room where the robbery was unfolding, questioned Vagnu about what was happening, and immediately walked away after stating he wanted no part in the criminal activity.

Voluntary Cooperation Ignored

The family further revealed that a few days after the incident, Oluwatobiloba discovered a misleading video posted by a TikTok influencer that erroneously linked him to the robbery.

Seeking to clear his name, he voluntarily contacted the police to present himself for questioning. At the time, law enforcement officials reportedly dismissed his worries, telling him not to bother because he was not considered a suspect.

”Our son is a calm and sociable young man who has never been linked to any criminal activity before now,” the parents’ statement read. “We are devastated. We simply want the world to hear our side of the story. His life is about to be destroyed for something he did not do.”

Questions Raised Over Missing Suspects

The Akinrinola family has raised serious concerns regarding the consistency of the prosecution, pointing out that other individuals heavily implicated by the victims were not held to the same standard.

They noted that Ayomide Ibraheem—whom victims specifically identified as the individual blocking the door to prevent them from escaping—was allowed to go scot-free. Furthermore, the prosecution reportedly failed to bring the other primary suspects into the courtroom, with police stating the individuals simply failed to honor their invitations.

As the July 27 sentencing date approaches, the distraught parents are calling for an immediate intervention and a thorough diplomatic or legal review of the case to prevent what they describe as a severe miscarriage of justice.
