​Search Ends at Collapsed Lagos Building: Death Toll Rises to Nine, 27 Rescued

​LAGOS — Emergency first responders have officially concluded search and rescue operations at the site of Thursday’s building collapse in the Alakija area of Satellite Town, Lagos State. The final casualty figures have risen to nine fatalities, while 27 survivors were successfully pulled from the wreckage.

​The tragedy occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, when a three-storey commercial building located on Old Ojo Road, near the Alakija Bus Stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, suddenly caved in. The structure housed multiple bustling commercial establishments, including cyber cafés, a photo studio, mobile phone repair shops, a bookshop, and several office spaces.

​The Final Recovery Figures

​Initial assessments on Thursday afternoon indicated eight deaths and 26 rescues. However, overnight excavations and meticulous clearing to ground zero uncovered more victims.

​According to a final update issued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) through its Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, the rescue operations have now drawn to a close:

• ​Rescued Alive: 27 persons were extracted from the debris. They received immediate pre-hospital medical care from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transferred to nearby healthcare facilities.

• ​Fatalities: 9 bodies were recovered in total. These included four adults who died immediately upon structural failure, and five additional victims, among whom was a two-year-old baby girl.

​The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for formal identification and release to their respective families.

​Coordinated Emergency Response

​The rescue operations involved a multi-agency coalition including LASEMA, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (mobilized from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Fire Service, and the Nigeria Police Force.

​To expedite structural penetration, LASEMA deployed its heavy-duty excavator alongside two additional excavators provided by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to clear the dense concrete and steel framing safely.

​Government Orders Structural Integrity Sweeps

​While an official investigation into the root cause of the structural failure is currently underway, experts have pointed to familiar systemic culprits—chiefly structural defects, substandard building materials, and unauthorized deviations from approved construction designs.

​In reaction to the disaster, the Lagos State Government extended its condolences to the victims’ families and announced decisive preventative measures. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed LASBCA to immediately begin structural integrity assessments on all buildings adjoining the collapse site to check for signs of secondary stress or failure, promising swift enforcement and demolition of any structures deemed unviable.
