President Bola Tinubu made a surprise visit to the Lagos residence of prominent philanthropist and business tycoon Chief Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu, popularly known as Baba Ijebu, on Wednesday. The Nigerian leader was accompanied by former Bayelsa State Governor and media entrepreneur Ben Murray-Bruce, in what observers describe as a gesture of reconciliation and political bridge-building.
Chief Adebutu, 89, is the founder of Premier Lotto, Nigeria’s largest lottery company, and a key figure in Ogun State’s political landscape. He ran as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 elections, where he challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, now Governor Dapo Abiodun. Despite a contentious election petition that reached the Supreme Court—where Adebutu alleged irregularities—the visit underscores Tinubu’s efforts to foster unity across party lines ahead of future political engagements.
Eyewitness accounts and social media footage circulating online captured Tinubu and Murray-Bruce arriving at Adebutu’s upscale home in the upscale Lekki area of Lagos. The delegation spent about an hour inside, engaging in private discussions. While official details remain sparse, sources close to the matter suggest the meeting focused on national development, philanthropy, and mending fences post-election.
Ben Murray-Bruce, a longtime associate of Tinubu and a vocal supporter during the 2023 presidential campaign, played a pivotal role in facilitating the visit. The former senator has often positioned himself as a unifier in Nigerian politics, leveraging his entertainment industry connections and cross-party networks.
Baba Ijebu’s influence extends far beyond business. Through his Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation, he has donated billions of naira to education, healthcare, and community projects across Ogun, Lagos, and other states. Recent initiatives include scholarships for thousands of students and support for flood victims in 2024. His visit from Tinubu highlights the intersection of wealth, philanthropy, and politics in Nigeria’s elite circles.
Political analysts view this as Tinubu’s strategic outreach to opposition stalwarts, especially in the Southwest, where PDP remains competitive. “It’s a masterstroke in optics—showing magnanimity to a rival who could sway voters,” said a Lagos-based commentator. No official statement has been released from the Presidency or Adebutu’s camp as of press time, but the event has sparked widespread online buzz, with #TinubuBabaIjebu trending on X (formerly Twitter).
This development comes amid Tinubu’s ongoing nationwide consultations, including recent meetings with traditional rulers and business leaders, as his administration grapples with economic reforms and security challenges.
