Ogun LG Chairmen Receive SUVs from Abiodun to Boost Grassroots Delivery

In a significant move to bolster grassroots governance across Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has handed over brand-new SUVs to the chairmen of all 20 local government areas (LGAs). The distribution ceremony, held at the Ogun State Government House in Abeokuta, the state capital, underscores the administration’s commitment to equipping local leaders with essential resources for effective service delivery.

The vehicles were officially presented by Ganiyu Hamzat, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who represented the governor during the event. Speaking at the handover, Hamzat emphasized that the SUVs would enable LG chairmen to navigate the state’s diverse terrains more efficiently, reaching remote communities to address pressing needs like infrastructure, health, and education.

Governor Abiodun, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Oyetola, described the gesture as a fulfillment of his administration’s promise to empower local governments. “These vehicles are not just cars; they are tools for progress. They will help our LG chairmen cover more ground, respond faster to citizens’ concerns, and drive development from the grassroots up,” Abiodun said.

This initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by the Ogun State government to revitalize local administration. Recent reports from local media outlets like Punch Nigeria and Vanguard indicate that the SUVs are Toyota Highlander models, valued at millions of naira each, procured through state allocations. The distribution aligns with Abiodun’s broader infrastructure agenda, which has seen similar support for local councils, including monthly financial allocations exceeding N1 billion collectively.

Chairmen who received the keys expressed gratitude and pledged enhanced performance. For instance, the Chairman of Abeokuta North LGA, Ayinde Adio, highlighted how the vehicles would aid in monitoring ongoing road projects and emergency responses. Other recipients, including those from Ifo, Ado-Odo/Ota, and Remo North, echoed similar sentiments, noting the challenges of relying on aging fleets amid rising fuel costs and security concerns.

Ogun State, with its 20 LGAs spanning urban hubs like Abeokuta and industrial zones in Sagamu, has long grappled with coordination between state and local levels. Analysts view this as a strategic play ahead of the 2026 local elections, potentially strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) hold at the grassroots. No opposition backlash was reported immediately, though some civil society groups have called for transparency in procurement.
